Full property description

  • Situation
This stunning Victorian mansion dating back to 1868 was built for the Pengilly family, in mock-Tudor style with ornate gables and an octagonal tower. This once private, gothic mansion has had several incarnations, being formerly a hospital during World War II, then a convent and later a school, before being converted into luxury apartments in the 1990's. It was purchased by Francis Baring-Gould in 1895 who continued to modify the house and develop the gardens until his death in 1927. It was around 1907 that Baring-Gould turned his attentions to the grounds, laying them out with ornamental features and specimen trees which became a strange mixture of fantasy and horticultural expertise.

The personal front door opens into the entrance hall of "Beechlawn" where the high ceilings and picture rails give a first impression of the character throughout the apartment. The large reception room features two oval-shaped windows, original features from the former coach house, along with the picture rails and further, lovely high ceilings. This room provides ample space for a dining table and there is a door with access to an office area or small library. The kitchen/breakfast room has a window overlooking the landscaped communal gardens and has ample space for a breakfast table. The kitchen is fitted with a range of painted eye and base level Shaker-style units with worksurface over comprising an integrated double electric oven with gas hob and extractor hood over, integrated microwave oven, dishwasher and fridge/freezer, and space and plumbing for a washing machine. The master bedroom has a window overlooking the communal gardens, a built-in wardrobe and door to the en-shower room which is fitted with a white suite. The guest bedroom also has the benefit of built-in wardrobes and a door to the 'Jack & Jill' style bathroom which is fitted with a 4-piece white Victorian-style suite including a bath, WC, pedestal wash-hand basin and bidet. This room can also be accessed from the hallway.

Outside the enchanting grounds feature large areas of lawn and several seating areas for relaxation. The property is approached via electric gates leading to the resident's parking area, garage and access to the building. An internal viewing is highly recommended to appreciate this spacious, character apartment and it's lovely setting within Merrow Village.
