… Drink and be Merry: Four Beautifully Boozy Experiences to Try in Surrey

Silent Pool Gin, Guildford

Ginterested? Set in a beautiful scenic location, Silent Pool’s Distillery offers an enlightening 90-minute guided tour of an exclusive producer, giving a potted history of gin and its recent surge in popularity. During the experience, you will learn about the four methods of production and the unique combination of botanicals that make this drink one of the finest craft gins on the market. You will have the chance to sample throughout the tour, ending with a tasting of the full range – which includes the gin itself and their gin-based fruit cordials.

The Denbies Estate, Dorking

Established near the South Downs since 1986, Denbies vineyard has won a host of national and international awards and is now one of the largest wine producers in the UK. The Estate’s sunny slopes and chalky soil (comparable to that of Reims, at the heart of France’s Champagne region) make for ideal placement.

Denbies run a range of events and experiences, including indoor and outdoor tours. Prices start from as little as £7 for the Outdoor Vineyard Train Tour, but for the real winos, the Denbies Vine and Dine Grape-Picking Experience (including grape picking tuition, detailed behind-the-scenes walking tour, wine tastings, lunch and a Denbies Estate grown vine to take away as a memento) is recommended.

Hogs Back Brewery, Tongham

Named after the nearby Hogs Back Ridge, the Hogs Back Brewery has been creating tasty craft ales, ciders and lagers since 1992, and proves Bill Bryson undeniably right when he wrote, "There is almost no area of British life that isn’t touched with a kind of genius for names."– Hogs Back has produced to date, Still Wobbling, Surrey Nirvana, Rip Snorter and O.T.T. (Old Tongham Tasty) to name but a few.

The brewery tour takes the visitor through the full production process of Hogs Back drinks, starting with the hop garden, including lots of chances to taste from the full drinks range, and including a limited edition Hogs Back half pint glass to take home afterwards. The shop includes a mighty 300-strong collection!

Inn at Home, Guildford

The Inn at Home is a concept created by two friends, Simon Douglas and David Marklew: sharing a love for fantastic customer service from staff that not only know what they’re on about, but have a real passion for the product. They have picked up awards along the way, recently including the prestigious Best Beer Retailer – South at the Celebrate British Beer Awards in the Houses of Parliament for the second year running. Simon and David work hard to support local producers and are always searching for new and interesting products.

The business runs a wide selection of various tasting events, designed to be a fun and social experience - these range from a Rum Experience, English Wine Showcase, German Beer Extravaganza and Celebration of Premium Vodka; these are bookable in advance. When visiting the shop, staff are extremely welcoming and it is easy to try out all sorts of different tipples!
